The sun broke through the clouds today and we were able to get out and complete one of our favorite local walks in Rochdale. As this was Easter weekend, the Fun-Fair had come to town and as I used to live on the coast, the memories of the fairground (Southport) came flooding back.
We see the fairground differently now, and as we enjoyed the sounds and music from a distance – the other side of the lake – as we walked around, clearly our son was becoming increasingly distressed by the sights and sounds as we came up close. Another misjudged activity on our part, as his mind found processing the noises difficult – where were they coming from, what were they meaning, overlapping music and sounds and screams and laughter were not able to be processed in his mind and a panic set in. Covering his ears and closing his eyes to the flashing lights, running bodies all detracted from the ‘Fun’ Fair atmosphere.
We were near to our picnic site and so speeding past other peoples fun and laughter, we found a quiet spot to open our picnic and look on from a distance, where we could calmly talk about what this was, how it was being enjoyed by others and in time it was disregarded totally for quieter interests on the walk.
Have a lovely Easter Weekend everyone 🙂
